Hever Castle in Bloom
Day Trips | Farnham, Alton and Four Marks 26th June £42 Seniors, £45 Adults - includes entry to Castle and Gardens
The 'in Bloom' week features many castle rooms filled with flower arrangements and the 4,000 plant rose garden at its best. See the 'Italian Garden', explore the 'Blue Garden' and the 'Long Border' filled with different perennials, or enjoy the various streams, cascades and fountains, as well as the lake.
Hever Castle is everything a castle should be. Old, moated and reputedly haunted - it has a fairy-tale quality about it. This 700 years old double-moated castle was once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn. Discover the castle rooms with their antique furniture and tapestries as well as the largest collection of Tudor portrait paintings outside of the National Gallery.
The gardens cover 125 acres and include a rose garden with 4,000 roses, an Italian garden, a Tudor topiary garden, the 'Blue Garden' and the 'Long Border'. There are stream and lakeside walks as well as a yew tree maze and a ‘water’ maze. You can take a boat trip across the lake (at weekends and school holidays only - extra charge) for lovely views, or simply walk around it yourself. Apparently, the lake was dug by 800 men working day and night for two years so take time to appreciate their effort!
The 'Astor's Garden Legacy' exhibition traces the development of the gardens from Tudor times until the present day. It also describes the work of William Waldorf Astor who create the award-winning gardens between 1904-1908. Astor was the richest man in America who came to England in 1891 and became a British subject in 1899 – the Waldorf Hilton hotel in London was opened by him in 1908.
There are various other displays and exhibition including a collection of miniature model houses that charts the changes in English country houses from Tudor to Victorian times.
There are cafes and restaurants or bring your own picnic.
